This is a list of the most ineresting projects I have been working on VideaLab since 2003. We were a technical team, mostly formed by software engineers, but also by architects, civil engineers, historicians, designers and artists, and is the whole team who get this works come to life. I will try to explain what were my tasks and what interesting aspects were in its development.

Most VideaLAB works use a mix of the technologies, as our realtime terrain visualization engine SANTI, our libraries for virtual reality, IO devices, 360º photo and video visualization, natural interfaces, computer vision, etc., made from the scratch in more than ten years of software development.

Description: The use of multi-touch surfaces is not yet widespread in the field of architectural visualization. This project applies this technology to the visualization of the two buildings that make up the IT and Communications Research Centre (CITIC),of the University of La Coruña. This way, the buildings can be look round in real time with natural interaction with the user, using a multi-touch device based on FTIR technology.
The experience with this model is not simply limited to the exploration outside the building, but can go into it virtually and analyze it as a whole through a system of interactive sections. You can also access to additional information activating contextual elements, interaction with visitors, and information systems of the various laboratories and offices in real time.

Shows: Public presentation in Santiago de Compostela to inform population about the new coastal plan.
Description: Showing the huge amount of data generated by technicians about coastal information was not a easy task. Also we could try the new GPGPU method developed in VideaLab for coding MPEG2 video directly from Frame Buffers to capture high resolution videos, with success.

Description: Versatility and potential were emphasized by the Mayor during his official presentation.Based on the SANTI navigator, the user can visualize all projects and all types of contents, from 3D visualization over the digital terrain model to the inclusion of files, vectorial files, photos, etc.

Shows: Public presentations over the Galician territory to inform population about the conversion to digital TV.
Description: From SANTI 3D terrain visualization engine is made an application with GIS information on the Digital Terrestrial Television Network, through a comfortable and intuitive interface allowing to enable or disable the various layers and entities individually.
Taking advantage of three-dimensional nature of the browser also added realistic solid models and the structures of metal or concrete posts and analog panels.

Description: This new website was developed for the Ayuntamiento de A Coruña to show the city from a different and more attractive point of view, taking advantage of newest technologies in digital images. It is divided in to four sections: “At Close Range”, “Cristal City”, “Its rhytm” and “Touring”. In this, we see panoramic views of the city with impressive zoom levels, ways filmed in 360º degree video of the most representative areas, and animations showing the pulse of the city. To achieve this, high resolution techniques have been used, based on hundreds of High Resolution photos joined together previously calibrated for each panoramic view, videos using a six-camera system then joined to get the 360 degrees, or timelapses video showing in a few minutes what happens during some hours.

Description: Using the potential of immersion and sense of "presence" of the metaverse, the Interactive Reconstruction of the Tower of Hercules was performed. The symbolic and cultural property of this ancient building is linked to the origins of Galicia and its own strong maritime tradition. This immersive environment enables the user to experiece with that living icon of antiquity, the "Pharum Brigantium, to perceive their spaces in scale, proportions, form and material which varied during the centuries, allowing the visitor to understand the various stages that this important milestone of Galician culture lived.

Description: This project will bring the most innovative technologies that allow images to display a level of detail unprecedented in the service of culture, specifically of the historical, and published in this half as the Internet makes it accessible to anyone anywhere in the world.The very high resolution image, which is the technological base of the web application can discover in a completely visual history of the Cathedral from different points of view. On this picture you will get other multimedia content related to the item you are viewing.

Sistema Integral de Gestión de Tráfico (2007 - 2008) [link1] [link2]

Customer: Telvent - Centro de Gestión de Tráfico del Noroeste
Technologies: Terrain Rendering (SANTI), GIS, Integration with Telvent systems.
Uses and shows: as a technical tool in the traffic control center, and showed in the National Convention in Transport at Vigo.
Description: VideaLAB has developed an interactive display of traffic information on the 3D terrain engine SANTI, for displaying weather information from data supplied by the facilities managed by the Traffic Management Center (CGT) of the Northwest.

Impacto Ambiental y Cuencas Visuales de Piscifactorías. Aplicación a Laxe Brava, Porto do Son, Seiruga y Anglet (2007 - 2008) [link]

: Shadowing analysis, new movements paradigms, vegetation generation and rendering, realtime rendering.
Uses and shows: Used as a technical tool and also for showing to population the actions in this field (Malpica).
Notes: This project was interesting enought to publish a paper about some of the techniques we developed on it. The application was intended to study the environmental visual impact that some fish farms would do over the surrounding landscape, located in the Galician coast.
All of this is perfectly described in [the paper], but to summarize this meaned two main problems: the vegetation simulation and the analysis algorithm. The first one was solved by a semi-automated tool, which let the user to paint closed polylines on the tree mass, and automatically 3D billboards some random size, at its right elevation over the terrain, and with a density parameter. The texture applied were pics autochthonous tress from a library.
The analysis algorithm was inspired in the CG well known raytracing algorithm. Some specific points were chosen to calculate the visibily, that was represented by the shadow generated over the terrain if an omni light is located in that place. Also, we calculated the inverse operation, by distributing a big number of lights over the volume of the buildings.
The resulting application was used both for public shows and as an analsys tool, as trees could be added in strategic places to reduce impact, and the planify their planting.

A Fonte Encantada (2007) [link]
The Enchanted Fountain
Customer: Convenio I+D UDC - Xunta de Galicia
Technologies: Computer Vision, Natural Interfaces, Projection Blending, Artificial Intelligence, RealTime Rendering, Shading, Audio Control.
Shows: Permanent Exhibition at Galicia Dixital.
Description: The installation designed for this application simulates a magical natural fountain located inside a cave, which has some ancient ruins. The fountain has been placed on a platform, which confers an altar-like apparance to it.
There is a hidden system which analyzes simultaneously the images of up to 8 user's hands.The analysed pictures are taken by two cameras located in the vegetal top structure.
A two-meter-long irregular-shaped screen in the background reflects the upward mirrored images emitted by two projectors located underneath the platform that supports the whole set. In order to get a continuous high-resolution image, images are blended in along the whole surface.
This system is based on a computer control application which transforms the position and hand movements of all users into the equivalent movement of 8 simultaneous cursors acting on the contents, so that it must be able to create a thread for each one of the participants, in such a way that each visitor has the feeling that the fountain is replying to their particular movements, as well as to those of the other users.

Description: This application recreated the most interesting places of the Casa del Agua, so that the user that visit them through the interactive 360-degree panoramic views. In this way, the user can view the different spaces which make up Termaria, one of the biggest water entertainment centers in Europe and one of the most important infrastructures in the cultural, recreational and commercial fields in Galicia.
Users are immersed in a high-resolution picture, where they can interactively focus on the zones they want. Moreover, clicking on certain sensitive areas will allow them to move to a different location, if a panoramic view is available. In addition to the immersive picture, additional information on the different spaces is displayed.

Description: A game where users uses a tiling table to drive some avatars to different destinations in Galicia, to show the traditional parties of the places.

Plan de Saneamiento de las Rías de A Coruña e O Burgo (2005) [link]

Technologies: Terrain Rendering (SANTI), some preliminary GIS support.
Shows: About ten presentations over Galicia, showing to population the actions token in this field.
Description: This were one of the first projects where we started to probe the render of GIS layers in the SANTI terrain visualization engine. A realtime application was developed to fly over the affected place where they can activate and deactivate different GIS layers (of points and polygons) to show the issues and solutions implemented. It was used in about five public presentations by local politicians.

Description: The Empty Museum is a Virtual Reality concept designed to be used for museums and interpretation centres. It can be described as a virtual reality room where, once wearing a backpack and a HMD (headMounted Display), the user experiences suspended virtual objects while walking and enjoying freely this immersive educational experience.

Description: Working in collaboration with the company DYGRA FILMS at the request of the Ministry of Planning of the City Council of A Coruña. This company made an original interpretation of the state of the Castro, now in ruins, and requested the collaboration of the laboratory to adapt the model so it could be shown in real time, facilitating the journey for the user. To add more realism, the software application that displays the model incorporated the latest shaders available on current graphics hardware, so that textures can be observed roughness, fire, smoke, etc. This simulation gives a highly realistic appearance, looking for the limits of what can now be obtained in real-time visual quality.

Description:The development of a three-dimensional digital model of a historic building, such as the one at hand, involves specific problems. The challenge of creating such a geometrically complex mesh is joined by the wish to create a virtual object whose elements provide the necessary rigour and precision in order to make it into a tool suitable for scientific research, the popularization of history and the faithful re-creation of the past. So, the aim was not to get a mere virtual model, but a geometry-based narrative tool.

Description: This is our most important system, developed fully on the lab. Our work here were permanent, with infinite improvements, and supported platforms, from SGI Onyx workstation (runing IRIX OS) to PC (multiOS). More info on the papers and the links.
